Youth Organizing for Environmental Justice [10:45am-11:45am, Room 120]
Elena Reyes + Aldo Sierra, Youth Leaders | COMMUNITIES FOR A BETTER ENVIRONMENT

This session focuses on the root causes of environmental injustice and the resistance for sustainable communities. Environmental injustice is not just one problem — it is a series and cumulative inequities that affect our health and daily lives. As young leaders of our neighborhoods we will embrace the struggles our families and ourselves have put into practice to effectively defeat chronic corporate polluters.

square-flts-logoPlanting An Urban Tree Canopy: Sustaining a Healthy Livelihood for Lennox [10:45am-11:45am, Room 134]
Viviana Franco + Maria De Leon | FROM LOT TO SPOT

Learn how From Lot to Spot (FLTS) engages in green space equity work in the low-income, under-served Lennox community, just east of LAX. Driven by the facts that Lennox has the second worst air quality in the county, perpetual noise pollution and lacks adequate green spaces for youth and families, FLTS created the Lennox Enhancement and Engagement Project (LEEP). LEEP has been designed to accomplish two objectives: to create Lennox’s first-ever urban tree canopy, featuring the luscious California Sycamore and sturdy Southern Live Oak species, and to involve, engage and educate local community — especially youth — on their right to pursue environmental justice in their neighborhoods. Come hear our methodology and strategies during this interactive presentation!

square-larooted-logoFood & Waste Rooted in Ancestral Wisdom [10:45am-11:45am, Room 120]
Brenda Yancor + Cinthia Lozano + Johanna Iraheta + Rio Contreras | LA ROOTED

How can we practice sustainability with our students through the lens of ancestral wisdom? LA Rooted will present hands-on practices we implement during our seasonal programming with youth and young adults, from the cultivation, harvest & preparation of native plants for food, to the conservative creation of waste in the form of greywater, compost, and disposable trash. As we strive to teach future generations the importance of our natural resources, we do so by looking back to our roots and implementing ancestral practices that have been demonized, belittled or disregarded in mainstream society.

square-ECMSgardena-logoSpeaking Out: Engaging English Learners of All Levels to Take a Stand on Biodiversity [1:30pm-2:30pm, Room 130]
Ginnia Hargins + Katie Souther | ENVIRONMENTAL CHARTER MIDDLE SCHOOL

How can biodiversity serve as a lens to improve English Language Learning? Learn how to incorporate reading, writing, listening and speaking as an everyday science practice and engage students in speaking and writing persuasively at all levels. Take away real life experiences and classroom activities that help students understand AND take a stand on the importance of biodiversity.

square-kisstheground-logoThe Soil Story as a Teaching Tool [1:30pm-2:30pm, Room 134]
Lauren Tucker | KISS THE GROUND

Kiss the Ground’s educational video “The Soil Story” discusses in clear terms how carbon can be sequestered through regenerative farming. Watch the video and discuss ways to teach about soil health in classrooms, taking home supplemental materials to incorporate the video in your classroom. Kiss the Ground is a nonprofit dedicated to inspiring and advocating for the restoration of soil worldwide.

    square-ECHS-logoThe People’s Food: A Green Ambassadors Student-Led Sustainable Food Event [1:30pm-2:30pm, Room 120]
Betsy Rivera (Green Ambassadors Teacher) + Vanesa Iniguez (student) + Justin Hall (student) | ENVIRONMENTAL CHARTER HIGH SCHOOL

Using Green Ambassadors curriculum, the surrounding community and a little imagination, ECHS teacher Betsy Rivera will attempt inspire 130 students to organize an event on campus that focuses on sustainable food solutions. Teachers will walk away with lesson plan ideas, Green Ambassadors curriculum and rubrics to plan a student-led community outreach event of their own on any topic.
