Distribute the essay A Good Picture, and read through it with the class. For each concept covered in the essay, have students point out examples of how that concept relates to the magazine images they are looking at. (Alternatively, you may wish to have teams do this as a group activity, then report out to the class what they observed.)
Use
the web resource you selected earlier to familiarize students with techniques for taking good photographs. Students should take notes as you do this. Then have students work in their groups again to respond to these prompts, in writing.
- How do these elements of the photograph relate to how well it communicates its message(s)?

- What would you do differently with this picture to communicate the message more clearly or more powerfully?
Distribute copies of the Checklist for an Effective Earth+ Photo Story. Take students through the Composting Photo Story once to familiarize them with its content, then take them through it again while they use the checklist to evaluate it individually.
Ask teams to work together to respond to this prompt, in writing:
- What could be done differently to make this photo story more effective?
Distribute copies of the Earth+ Photo Story Board Example, one per pair of students. Have students work in teams to respond to these prompts in writing:
- What is missing from the story board?
- How does a story board help create a good photo exhibit?
