Objectives: Values Students believe that they have a responsibility to contribute to the well-being of their community.

Students work to gather and share knowledge that supports the well-being of their community.

Students encourage other community members to engage in practices that contribute to the well-being of their community.

Assessment In the Performance Task for this lesson, students communicate Earth+ message through a different form of marketing that is natural and organic, and find a way to measure their results.
Preparation

Make enough copies of the Earth+ Marketing Worksheet for each team. (download here)

Make sure each team will be able to access a computer with Internet connection.

Into

Ask students if they can tell you want the term "marketing" means, and have them write down what they know about marketing. Share answers and guide the discussion to agreement that "marketing" is, essentially "getting people to want to buy something or do something".

Through

Ask students to list methods of marketing that they have seen. Put their answers in two columns; "Tradional Marketing" and "Alternative Marketing".

In the "traditional" column you will put examples marketing which consists of paid ads which are placed in outlets such as television, magazines, radio, websites and other media.

In the "alternative" column put other methods of communicating to people about a product or service: a funny you-tube video, and a photo that is interesting enough that people send it to each other via e-mail, or the use of a product in a movie, hearing about something from a friend, etc.

Discuss what might be some advantages of alternative marketing techniques (much less expensive, people are more willing to pay attention to them).

Have students work in teams, each team to a computer, to find out more about the alternative marketing techniques that are listing in the web resources for this lesson (available here). Each team should research several different tecnniques (depending on amount of time available), taking notes as they go.

Ask teams to share what they learned and to state their favorite alternative marketing technique.

Ask each team to think of an alternative marketing technique for an earth+ solution, and to fill out the Earth+ Marketing Worksheet based on the technique they have chosen.

Pair up teams to share their work and to discuss ways in which the techniques they've chosen could be improved.

Hold a whole-class discussion of the results and have students rate each technique on a 1-3 scale to select the best.

Beyond

Students complete the alternative marketing performance task.
