Students work to gather and share knowledge that supports the well-being of their community.

Students encourage other community members to engage in practices that contribute to the well-being of their community.

Assessment In the performance task for this lesson, students sell earth+ solutions to raise money in order to achieve wider implementation of sustainability practices, services and products.

Make enough copies of the Earth+ Marketing Worksheet for each team. (Download here)

Make enough copies of the handout What You Should Know About Fund-Raising for each team. (Download here)

Make enough copies of the handout Earth+ Fund-Raiser Checklist for each student. (Download here)

Find out what earth+ products and services your students could sell to community members.

Into

Pose the Guiding Question for the lesson, and get some ideas from students about how they could raise money to implement earth+ solutions.

Prompt a class discussion with this question:

  • What fundraisers have you been part of, and what did you like what did you not like about them?
Through

Explain to students that they will be raising money by selling or raffling products that represent or promote solutions to earth+ issues.

Explain the difference between selling a product or service and raffling a product or service.

Explain the the product or service could be something that solves an earth+ issue (like a composter or reusable shopping bag) or something that promotes a solution (like a t-shirt or hat with a message on it).

Give examples of such products and services (see web page "Earth+ Fundraiser Ideas".

Based on what you can acquire and sell in your area, decide with the class which products and services you will sell.

Arrange the class into teams and have each team fill out the Earth+ Marketing Worksheet for the marketing of the selected product(s)/service(s).

Have each team discuss among themselves and agree on answers to this question:

  • How can we be sure that this activity brings in more money than it costs?

Distribute the handout What You Should Know About Fund-Raising. Each team should have one student read it aloud, and ensure that they understand it.

Distribute the Earth+ Fund-Raiser Checklist. Discuss each item as a class to ensure that students understand it and why it is on the checklist. Take suggestions for any other items that should be on the list, and add them.

Have students work in pairs to practice selling the selected product(s)/service(s) to each other. Observe as they do so and ensure that they demonstrate that they can apply the two rules from the handout in those sales.

Beyond

Have student teams carry out the Performance Task.
